Countless outdoor opportunities await within a short drive from the East End.

Nearby Parks

While the East End has a plethora of parks to satisfy nearly all recreational needs, the neighborhood is conveniently located in the midst of many more parks and green spaces within a short walk, ride, or drive. A quick walk through downtown will bring you to the popular Sunrise Carriage Trail, terminating at the former Governor’s mansion and a great view of downtown, or to Magic Island, a large river-side park boasting a playground, exercise facilities, and beach volleyball courts. Walking east from the Capitol along the Kanawha River, you will soon reach Daniel Boone Park, with its beautiful vistas of the River and access to the Craik Patton House (home of the father of the famous WWII general) and Boy Scouts’ Buckskin Scout Reservation.

Within biking distance or a short drive away is the Elk River Rail Trail, which ends at Coonskin State Park, which features an amphitheater, a skate park, fishing, a swimming pool, a golf course, mini-golf, a top-quality soccer facility, volleyball and tennis courts, pedal boats, and picnic and event facilities. A short drive from the East End will take you to the Kanawha State Forest with its 9,300 acres of forest, creeks, ponds, camping and picnic facilities, and excellent hiking and mountain biking trails.

While all these recreational options should keep you busy, the more adventurous can take a brief drive to all that Wild and Wonderful West Virginia has to offer. Within about an hour’s drive, you can find yourself at a premier ski resort, rafting the world-class rapids of the Gauley River National Recreation Area or New River Gorge National River, or at any number of great hiking, camping, and other outdoor recreation sites.
